Ethical Issues in Data Collection
7 years ago in Questionnaire Design By Manpreet Jaiswal
I need to collect data from 12-14 years students. My research is about meditation and its effect on migrane and concentration in teenagers. I am unaware about ethical issues and how should I frame my questionnaire. Because the student-respondents are too young to get the questions right, I’m not understanding how to create such questions that they would be able to answer in apt way without stressing much.

For ethical clearance, you must read the information posted here: http://www.zu.ac.ae/main/en/research/for_researchers/research_integrity/ethical_clearance.aspx . A lot of management and accounting or researches involving only factual data may not be required to have ethical clearance. Regarding questionnaire design, I opted for a standardised questionnaire as it helps in defending it for use and you do not need to run pilot analysis to check for reliability. Do check if your study can deploy a standardised questionnaire. I can suggest you to look at this: http://davidvago.bwh.harvard.edu/measures-of-mindfulness/ where you look for some standardised questionnaires for your study.

Your research definitely will require ethical clearance. If you go to your University doctorate page or learning center, you will find ethical approval form. You need to submit the same to your dissertation chair and he/she shall do the rest. In some Universities, there is ethical approval process which needs to be followed. You can check and follow the right process. For Walden, you will find all the information here: http://academicguides.waldenu.edu/researchcenter/orec . I took help of online dissertation coach from https://dissertationpal.com/methods-consulting/ also assisted me in designing the questionnaire . Questionnaire designing takes lot of time as you need to generally adopt likert 5 point scale and ask questionnaires which cover all the hypothesis. I would recommend that you purchase this book https://www.amazon.com/Evaluation-Analysis-Questionnaires-Research-Methodology/dp/1118634616 to understand the process correctly. It helped me immensely in designing my research. My research was on Clinical data post surgery.

The efficient way to create a questionnaire is to first list out the aspects that you are exploring in your research. Then begin investigating each of the issue and look for journal and research papers on it. If you get the supporting arguments and enough literature then, eliminate those aspects from your list. Now, focus on addressing the remaining issues, and prepare the questions accordingly. Suppose, you are unable to get an idea about the cure of migraine through prescriptions or something like at what extent prescriptions are able to reduce the effect of migraine upon the student’s life. Then you can frame questions like how many times do you take the prescriptions or can you feel any difference since the past four or six months. It is just an assumption okay? So, you can do something like this! Also, found this article you can study it http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/wol1/doi/10.1111/j.1468-2982.2004.00765.x/full
