Hi, For my PhD I plan to do structural analysis of helical gearbox casing. I have already studied and analysed the existing design. Now, my goal is to be able to suggest some modification on the existing design which can be in terms of changes in material or even the design itself. And I want to prove that my suggestions are better than the one already existing. However, I am not sure how to conduct this as my university cannot support me in doing this practically. Can someone please help me by suggesting some alternate ways?
I must say that your research idea is quite intriguing. Usually in such researches, wherein it is impossible for you to carry out the research, you can make use of certain software to run a simulation of the experiment that you would need to conduct. So here you can actually run a simulation without actually having to do the experiment. So say in your case, you have to test or conduct structural analysis of helical gearbox casing. Therefore, you can possibly tweak different properties of the existing design, identify the exact modification which would help you in achieving the end result. As far as the software is considered, I believe ANSYS would be best suitable to do simulation in fields of engineering.
