A senior scholar I deeply respect has published a paper that contains a significant error, which impacts my own work. Is it appropriate to contact them directly to point it out, and if so, how?

I've found a methodological flaw in a recent paper by a well-known professor in my field. My replication fails because of it. I don't want to publicly shame them or start a conflict, but the error is propagating. What's the most respectful and effective way to bring this to their attention?
