Can an independent scholar supervise PhD students or postdoctoral researchers?

I have extensive expertise and would love to mentor. Is it possible to formally supervise a PhD student or host a postdoc without being a professor? Are there models like external supervision or adjunct roles that allow this?

Direct, sole supervision is rare without an academic appointment, but meaningful mentorship is very possible through these models: 1) Adjunct/Visiting Positions: Secure a part-time or honorary affiliation with a university department, which often comes with supervision rights. 2) External Committee Member: Be invited onto a PhD supervisory committee as the external expert, guiding the project's specialized aspects. 3) Co-Supervision: Partner with a tenured professor who acts as the primary supervisor handling administration, while you provide daily research guidance. 4) Hosting "Placements": Offer summer or short-term research placements for students whose degrees are administered elsewhere. The key is to build strong relationships with department chairs and faculty who can vouch for you and create these bridges. Your value is your unique expertise, which can complement a primary supervisor's more general role.
