Can complex systems theory help us understand why healthcare costs spin out of control?

We treat healthcare like a machine—tweak one part, expect a predictable result. But costs keep rising. Could complex systems theory offer a better lens?

Absolutely. Healthcare is a complex adaptive system: patients, providers, payers, and regulators all interacting in unpredictable ways. Linear interventions (cut this price, mandate that form) often trigger feedback loops and unintended consequences. Complexity science models these dynamics, revealing why some cost-control policies fail and where systemic redesign might actually work. It's not about fixing a broken part. It's about understanding the whole living, breathing, adaptive mess. That's where real insight lives.
