Can you recommend papers on macroalgae ecology, taxonomy, and agricultural applications?

My research is pivoting toward sustainable agri-inputs. I have a basic grasp of seaweed biofertilizers, but I lack a strong foundation in macroalgal ecology and systematics. I need literature that doesn't just list applications but explains why specific algal taxa, from a physiological and ecological standpoint, possess properties (like growth hormones, oligosaccharides) that benefit terrestrial plants. Can you recommend foundational reviews?

I would recommend starting with two pillars. First, for the foundational ecological and taxonomic basis, seek out the comprehensive volume "Seaweed Ecology and Physiology" by Lobban & Harrison it's the standard. Then, for the applied agricultural bridge, look for the review by Khan et al. (often titled "Seaweeds as Biofertilizers") in Journal of Applied Phycology or the work of Dr. B. Subramanian's group. They excellently link specific compounds (e.g., betaines in Ascophyllum, carrageenans in Kappaphycus) to soil health and plant stress resistance. The journal Algal Research is also a prime source for the latest applied studies.
