How can anonymity be understood in postmodern society?

Anonymity appears paradoxical today, with simultaneous hyper-visibility and data surveillance. It is discussed as both liberating and destabilizing.I’m trying to understand anonymity conceptually within postmodern social theory.

From my experience engaging with postmodern theory, anonymity today is less about being unknown and more about fragmented visibility. I have seen individuals selectively reveal and conceal aspects of themselves across platforms. Anonymity can offer protection and experimentation, but it also weakens accountability. I would recommend understanding it as a relational condition shaped by technology, power, and context, rather than as a simple absence of identity.
