How can genetic technologies be used safely and ethically?
In our lab, we’re pushing the boundaries of gene editing, and the excitement is palpable. But during our ethics roundtables, a recurring anxiety emerges: how do we translate broad ethical principles into daily, actionable safety protocols? We’re looking for a consolidated framework that guides us from bench to bedside, ensuring our innovation doesn’t outpace our responsibility.

This is the central question of our field. I recommend embedding the Precautionary Principle not as a barrier, but as a mandatory step in experimental design proactively assessing long-term risks. In practice, I’ve seen the most robust outcomes from multidisciplinary ethics review boards that include scientists, ethicists, and community advocates. They force us to articulate "why" we should do something, not just if we can. For clinical applications, a staged and reversible approach, where possible, is crucial. Ultimately, safety is built on transparent dialogue with the public, acknowledging both hope and legitimate concern.
