How can I become involved in astronomy projects like this one?
I follow new discoveries eagerly, but I want to move from being a spectator to a participant. I'm not at a major research university. Are there legitimate avenues like specific programs, online platforms, or skills to develop—that can connect someone like me to a real research team working on cutting-edge problems in astronomy?

From my experience mentoring, there are more doors open than ever. First, I would recommend diving into citizen science platforms like Zooniverse. Projects like Planet Hunters or Galaxy Zoo have led to co-authored publications for volunteers. Second, build a public portfolio of your coding skills on GitHub, perhaps by replicating a classic data analysis from a paper. Third, apply for summer research programs like NSF's REU sites; many are designed for students from non-research colleges. Finally, don't hesitate to email professors or postdocs whose work excites you a concise email showing you've read their papers and have a specific skill to offer can open unexpected doors.
