How do I choose a specialization for my PhD that will be both intellectually fulfilling and professionally viable?
I'm starting my PhD and need to narrow my broad interest in "sustainability" to a specific topic. I love theoretical ecology, but I also want job options after graduation. How do I find the sweet spot between my passion and a field with traction?

The sweet spot lies at the intersection of four circles: 1) Genuine Curiosity (the puzzle that keeps you up at night), 2) Mentorship & Resources (a supervisor who is active in that niche, with lab access/funding), 3) Field Trajectory (is it an emerging, funded area? Scan recent special issues and big grant awards), and 4) Skill Portability (does it teach you methods—like modeling, GIS, stats—valued beyond academia?). For sustainability, theoretical ecology is strong if paired with computational or data science skills that are highly transferable. Don't just pick what's "hot"; pick a niche where you can become the expert on a defined problem, but with tools applicable to adjacent questions. That makes you both specialized and adaptable.
