Is allowing prayers at the opening of public meetings inconsistent with the principle of secularism?
This question arises from constitutional litigation. Different countries interpret secularism differently. I’m interested in doctrinal reasoning.

From my experience, the answer depends heavily on how secularism is constitutionally defined. I have seen courts in the United States tolerate ceremonial prayer, while French jurisprudence adopts a stricter neutrality model. The key issue is whether prayer coerces participation or endorses a particular faith. I would recommend analyzing context and effects rather than assuming a uniform constitutional rule.
