Two Visions of a Broken Dream: Comparing Ng‑g‑ and Achebe’s Postcolonial Novels

I'm looking at novels that critique African nations after independence. How do Ng?g? wa Thiong'o's Petals of Blood and Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah compare in their diagnosis of failure?

They're brilliant companion pieces. Both are scathing indictments of the corrupt post-independence state and its betrayal of socialist ideals. Their focus differs: Petals of Blood zeros in on a rural community crushed by neo-colonial economic forces, while Anthills examines an urban intellectual's struggle under military dictatorship. Stylistically, Ng?g? employs a more Marxist, historical materialist lens, whereas Achebe uses allegorical realism. Yet, at their core, both share a profound disillusionment and a desperate search for ethical leadership and hope.
