What are new results and conceptualizations in ecology, environmental science, ecotechnology, and biogeochemistry?

After focusing on my dissertation in wetland biogeochemistry for three years, I feel I've lost sight of the bigger picture in adjacent fields. As I prepare for postdoc applications, I need to catch up on major conceptual shifts and high-impact research directions beyond my niche. What are people getting excited about at conferences these days?

Having just returned from a major conference, I see a few dominant themes. Conceptually, there's a strong push towards macrosystems ecology using big data and remote sensing to ask questions at continent scales. Methodologically, eDNA is revolutionizing how we monitor biodiversity, from microbes to mammals. In application, the circular bioeconomy framework is reshaping how we view waste streams and sustainable design. Furthermore, the integration of social-ecological systems theory is now non-negotiable; we can't study ecology in a human vacuum anymore. I would recommend following journals like Trends in Ecology & Evolution and Global Change Biology to stay current.
