What are the different types of open access (Gold, Green, Hybrid, Diamond) and which is best for authors?
I want to publish open access, but I'm confused by the terms. What's the difference between Gold, Green, Hybrid, and Diamond OA? As an author with limited funds, which model should I prioritize?

Choosing a model depends on your resources and goals. Gold OA means publishing in a fully OA journal (like PLOS ONE); you often pay an APC (Article Processing Charge), but the final paper is free for all. Green OA is cost-free: you publish in any journal and later deposit the accepted manuscript in a repository (like your institutional archive or arXiv). Hybrid OA is the most expensive: you pay a high APC to a subscription journal to make just your article open, while the rest of the journal stays behind a paywall—this is widely criticized as "double-dipping." Diamond/Platinum OA journals charge no fees to anyone; they're often run by societies or universities. For most authors, I recommend Green OA (immediate, free, and often mandated by funders) or seeking out Diamond OA journals. Avoid Hybrid unless mandated and fully funded.
