What are the key research works on predicting individual behavior through decision-making?

My dissertation integrates cognitive modeling with machine learning to forecast consumer choices. I have the contemporary deep learning papers, but I'm worried I'm missing the intellectual roots the classic models that established how we mathematically formalize preference, utility, and irrationality. I need to ensure my theoretical framework is historically and methodologically grounded.

Some core references include Kahneman and Tversky’s work on heuristics and biases, Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, and Loewenstein’s research on emotion in decision-making. For more recent approaches, look at review papers in Annual Review of Psychology and methodological work in Psychological Methods that combine decision theory with predictive modeling and machine learning.

Thank you, this is really helpful Pranav.

From my experience in behavioral research, another important line of work comes from neuroeconomics and cognitive neuroscience, which links brain activity to decision patterns. Studies by Glimcher, Camerer, and Padoa-Schioppa show how neural signals can predict choices under risk and uncertainty.

Additionally, computational approaches like reinforcement learning models and Bayesian decision frameworks are increasingly used to predict behavior in both controlled experiments and large-scale real-world datasets.
