What exactly defines green construction in contemporary building practices?

As a researcher exploring sustainable development in the construction sector, I want to clearly understand what qualifies a project as “green.”
The term is widely used, but its practical and technical dimensions often remain unclear.
Clarifying this will help frame my research and evaluation criteria accurately.

From my experience working with sustainable building projects, green construction is less about a single feature and more about an integrated approach. I have seen that it combines responsible material selection, energy-efficient design, water conservation, and reduced lifecycle environmental impact. What truly distinguishes green construction is intent backed by measurable performance, not just certification labels. I would recommend viewing it as a systems-based practice where design, construction, operation, and even demolition are aligned with long-term environmental and social sustainability goals.
