What is the most practical pathway for a researcher to access periodicals published during the Mexican Revolution?

I'm planning a research trip and need a strategy. Should I prioritize digital portals first, or go directly to physical archives? What are the actual procedures for gaining access to reading rooms, requesting materials, and handling these often delicate documents in major Mexican institutions?

Adopt a 'digital-first, archive-specific' strategy. First, exhaust online collections like the Library of Congress's "Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers" and UNAM's Hemeroteca Digital to identify precise holdings and gaps. Then, for physical access, you must contact target archives (like the Hemeroteca Nacional) weeks in advance. From my experience, you'll need a formal research letter from your institution, official ID, and often to register for a researcher card. In the reading room, handling is strict: no bags, only pencils, and staff will often place items on special cradles. Prioritize archives based on your unique source needs after the digital review.
