I have seen a vibrant shift towards interdisciplinary methodologies. The most exciting work now integrates environmental history tracing the bio-commodities like timber, drugs, and dyes with digital network analysis of merchant correspondence and ship manifests. Scholars are using GIS to map trade routes and social network analysis to reveal kinship commercial webs. I would recommend following the projects emerging from the CHAM (Centre for the Humanities) in Lisbon and exploring journals like Early American History for this blend of quantitative and qualitative analysis.
