What scholarly research exists on the Lombards?
Before designing my dissertation proposal, I need a landscape view of the historiography. I'm less interested in a simple book list and more in understanding the intellectual currents what's considered settled, what's hotly contested, and where the gaps are.

The field has matured beyond the ethnogenesis debates of the 90s, though identity remains key. Currently, I see the real energy in interdisciplinary synthesis. Scholars are powerfully integrating archaeology (settlement patterns, burial data) with legal and documentary history to model social structures. There's also a growing focus on micro-regional studies comparing Lombard rule in Spoleto versus Benevento, for instance. The big unanswered questions now revolve around granular local integration and the kingdom's economic mechanics beyond tribute.
