What should be considered the core academic purpose of English as a subject in middle school education?

English occupies a significant place in middle school curricula. I’m interested in understanding whether its core focus should be language skills, literature, communication, or identity formation. This question is important for aligning curriculum goals with learner development stages.

From my experience, the core business of English in middle school is developing confident meaning-makers. I have seen curricula succeed when they balance language proficiency, comprehension, and expression rather than treating English as grammar alone. I would recommend focusing on reading for understanding, writing for clarity, and speaking for confidence. At this stage, English should help students think, communicate, and engage with ideas, not just prepare for examinations.
