What sources exist for obtaining historical climate data (e.g., temperature, precipitation) for northern South America and the Caribbean prior to the 20th century?

My research on agricultural history requires climate context. I know tree-ring and ice core data exist for the Andes, but what about colonial documentary sources like ship logs, missionary diaries, or plantation records for the Caribbean that note droughts, hurricanes, or unusual weather?
