Why is plant biology research essential for sustainable development?

As someone working on climate-resilient agriculture, I’m often asked to justify fundamental plant research to policymakers. They want direct applications, but I believe the fundamental science is the real catalyst. Could you articulate its essential, non-negotiable role in the sustainability paradigm?

From my work with agricultural NGOs and research institutes, I have seen a persistent gap. Policymakers often chase quick technological fixes, but sustainable development is built on a deep understanding of plant systems. I would recommend framing plant biology as the foundational operating system. Without research into photosynthesis, stress tolerance, and soil interactions, our "apps" for food security or carbon sequestration will ultimately fail. It provides the fundamental principles for all terrestrial sustainability.
