Can having too much information actually make our decisions worse?

I always thought more information leads to better decisions, but lately it feels overwhelming. Does information overload actually hurt decision-making ?

Surprisingly, yes — having too much information can make decisions harder instead of easier. When we’re flooded with options, opinions, and data, our brain struggles to process everything at once. This often leads to overthinking, procrastination, or even avoiding the decision altogether.

In many cases, people end up relying on gut feelings or simple shortcuts just to get unstuck, which isn’t always ideal. It can also increase stress and anxiety, because you constantly worry about whether you’re missing a “better” option. Even after making a choice, information overload often causes regret, with thoughts like “What if I chose wrong?” Instead of clarity, more information sometimes just creates more doubt.
