Can I work a part-time job during my PhD if my funding is low?
My stipend is barely enough to cover rent. I'm considering bartending or freelance work on weekends. Will this jeopardize my PhD progress or violate the terms of my funding? How do other students manage?

First, read your funding contract carefully. Some prestigious fellowships (like NSF GRFP) explicitly prohibit supplementary employment. If it's allowed, I advise extreme caution. A PhD is a full-time+ commitment. Adding even a 10-hour/week job can lead to burnout and slow your progress, costing you more in delayed graduation than you earn. If you must, seek flexible, low-cognitive-load work (e.g., library desk job where you can read). Better solutions: 1) Apply for additional small grants (departmental, travel, dissertation grants). 2) Increase TA/RA hours if permitted—this work is at least related to your career. 3) Freelance using your expert skills (editing, coding, consulting) which pays better per hour. The real fix is a realistic stipend; if your program chronically underfunds students, it's a systemic problem. Prioritize your research; it's your primary investment.
