What should I do if my PhD funding runs out before I finish my dissertation?

My funding guarantee ends in 4 months, but I need at least another year to finish experiments and write. I'm panicking. What are my options? Can I get an extension, take out loans, or are there emergency funds?

First, don't panic—act immediately. Schedule meetings with your supervisor and director of graduate studies. They are your first line of defense. Options they might facilitate: 1) Departmental "Bridge" Funding: Some have emergency stipends for students near completion. 2) Guaranteed Teaching: A last-semester TA position. 3) Funder Extension: If on a grant, a no-cost extension might be possible. 4) University Hardship Funds/Loans. Simultaneously, apply for dissertation completion fellowships (see Q7). If all else fails, explore federal student loans (in the US) as a last resort to cover living expenses for a final semester. The key is transparency with your department; they have an interest in your completion. Present a rigorous, revised timeline to show how additional support will lead directly to graduation. This is a common crisis; they have seen it before.
