Difference Between an Innovator and an Entrepreneur

People use "innovation" and "entrepreneurship" almost interchangeably. But are they the same thing? What's the core relationship between having a great idea and building a great business?

Think of them as two sides of the same coin. Innovation is the spark—the invention of a new product, process, or idea. Entrepreneurship is the engine that turns that spark into a market reality; it's the risk-taking, resource-organizing, and value-creating process of building a business around it. One without the other often fizzles out. Great entrepreneurs often commercialize innovations, and the act of building a business constantly creates demand for new innovations. They fuel each other in a cycle of growth.
