Do wetlands meaningfully contribute to sustainable development outcomes?

I often see wetlands discussed in conservation terms, but less so in development debates As a researcher, I want to understand whether wetlands actively support sustainable development goals. This matters for policy justification and land-use planning decisions.

From my experience in environmental policy research, wetlands are often undervalued despite their clear contribution to sustainable development. I have seen wetlands support livelihoods, regulate floods, improve water quality, and enhance climate resilience simultaneously. I would recommend viewing them as multifunctional assets rather than conservation obstacles. When properly managed, wetlands integrate environmental protection with social and economic benefits, making them a strong example of development that works with, rather than against, natural systems.
