How can I choose a dissertation topic in biology education?
As a doctoral candidate, I feel overwhelmed by the possibilities. I need a methodology to narrow my focus to a topic that is both personally compelling and makes a genuine contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in biology. How do experienced advisors guide this critical choice?

I always tell my students to start at the intersection of three circles: a persistent problem you’ve observed in the classroom, a theoretical framework from education literature that intrigues you, and a methodological approach you are eager to master. Don't seek the "perfect" topic; find a meaningful question you can live with for years. I recommend a deep dive into recent CBE Life Sciences Education issues to identify active discourse gaps. Your topic should be a conversation you're joining, not a monologue you're starting from scratch.
