How do I network effectively in a virtual or hybrid academic setting?

Many conferences are now online. How do I make connections through a screen? The chat box feels impersonal, and breakout rooms are hit or miss. What are the best practices for virtual academic networking?

Virtual networking requires more proactivity but offers unique precision. First, be visibly engaged: ask thoughtful questions in the Q&A or chat, using your full name and institution. This signals your interest. Second, use social media in real-time: tweet about talks using the conference hashtag and tag the speaker; they often respond. Third, leverage conference apps: many have attendee lists; send a direct message to someone whose work aligns with yours: "Enjoyed your talk on X. I'm working on something similar; would you be open to a 15-minute virtual coffee next week?" Fourth, propose a digital "meet-up": in a breakout room, suggest continuing the conversation in a smaller group later. The key is to create a direct, one-on-one digital interaction beyond the passive webinar format. Follow-up is even more critical online.
