What should I include in a follow-up email after meeting a scholar at a conference?
I had a great chat with a professor whose work I admire. I want to email them but don't want to seem pushy or generic. What's the formula for a follow-up that they'll actually remember and respond to?

Send the email within 24-48 hours. The subject line should be clear: "Following up from [Conference Name]." Open by thanking them for their time and mentioning one specific detail from your conversation (e.g., "I enjoyed discussing the challenges of ethnographic fieldwork in urban settings"). Then, make a clear, low-commitment request that relates to that detail: "You mentioned your 2021 paper on X; I've attached my related working paper and would welcome any thoughts you might have," or "Could you point me to one key text on Y you referenced?" Close by expressing your hope to stay in touch. This shows you were engaged, are proactive, and respect their time. Avoid vague "let's collaborate" requests at this stage.
