How do the length, width, and height of a rectangular patch antenna influence its performance and orientation?

In rectangular microstrip antennas, the geometry directly impacts key performance metrics. I want to understand how the patch length, width, and substrate height determine resonant frequency, impedance matching, bandwidth, and radiation pattern, and how proper orientation enhances antenna effectiveness.

From my experience designing rectangular patch antennas, I have seen that each dimension plays a distinct role. The length of the patch largely sets the resonant frequency—longer patches lower the frequency, shorter patches raise it. The width affects input impedance, radiation pattern, and gain; wider patches tend to increase bandwidth slightly and produce more uniform patterns. Substrate height influences bandwidth and radiation efficiency, with thicker substrates supporting broader bandwidth but potentially exciting surface waves. I would recommend carefully aligning the patch orientation with the feed and desired polarization, as misalignment can degrade matching and polarization purity. In practice, iterative simulation and prototyping are essential, as small dimensional variations can significantly impact resonant behavior and pattern quality.
