How does a scoping review differ from an integrative review in research practice?

Different review types are often used interchangeably. This creates confusion in research design and evaluation.I want a clear functional distinction between these two approaches.

From my experience advising research design, the distinction lies in intent rather than rigor. I have seen scoping reviews used to map a field, identify gaps, and clarify concepts without deep synthesis. I would recommend integrative reviews when the goal is to combine findings, theories, or methods into a coherent argument. Choosing between them depends on whether you are exploring a terrain or building an interpretive structure.
