How is Helen of Troy portrayed in the elegies of Sextus Propertius?
Propertius frequently reworks mythological figures for erotic and poetic ends.Helen appears less as an epic figure and more as a symbolic presence.I am interested in how her portrayal functions within elegiac discourse.

From my experience reading Propertius alongside other Augustan poets, Helen is less a moral warning than a poetic instrument. I have seen Propertius use her as a condensed symbol of desire, blame, and fascination rather than as a fully realized character. I would recommend reading these elegies against epic treatments of Helen to see how Propertius deliberately miniaturizes heroic myth, aligning it with personal obsession and the elegiac celebration of erotic instability.
