The term counter-development appears in critical sustainability literature. It is sometimes described as obstructive and sometimes as protective.I want to understand how it functions as a barrier within sustainability debates.

From my experience reading and engaging with critical development debates, counter-development is often misunderstood as purely obstructive. I have seen it function as a deliberate barrier against unsustainable projects rather than against sustainability itself. I would recommend interpreting counter-development as a political and ethical response to harmful development trajectories. In many cases, it highlights the need to slow down, reassess priorities, and protect social and ecological systems from irreversible damage.
