What is the most precise and academically accepted definition of sustainable development?

The term “sustainable development” is widely used but often interpreted differently across disciplines. As a researcher, I want a definition that is precise yet flexible enough for academic work.I am particularly concerned with avoiding vague or purely rhetorical usage.

From my experience teaching and reviewing sustainability research, the Brundtland definition remains the most precise and defensible starting point. I have seen scholars use it not because it is perfect, but because it clearly balances present needs with future capacity. I would recommend treating it as a conceptual anchor rather than a final answer. Strong research often builds on this definition by specifying ecological limits, social justice, or economic structures relevant to the particular context being studied.
