How useful is polysystem theory for studying multilingual Ethiopian literary history?
Ethiopian literature operates across multiple languages and traditions.Polysystem theory claims to explain such complex literary ecosystems.I want to know how practically useful it is in this case.

From my experience applying polysystem theory outside European contexts, it works best as a heuristic rather than a total explanation. I have seen it illuminate power relations between dominant and marginalized languages in Ethiopia. I would recommend using it selectively, alongside historical and sociolinguistic analysis. The theory helps map literary interaction, but local cultural dynamics must ultimately guide interpretation.
