I’m interested in understanding how and why many Southern African novels make use of an autobiographical mode.
While studying Southern African literature, I notice frequent overlaps between life writing and fiction. These novels often blur personal memory and collective history.I want to understand the purpose and implications of this narrative choice.

From my experience reading and teaching Southern African fiction, autobiographical modes often emerge from a need to bear witness. I have seen writers use personal narratives to negotiate apartheid, displacement, and identity in ways that feel both intimate and historically grounded. I would recommend viewing this mode not as self-indulgent, but as a strategy to connect private lives with collective trauma, allowing fiction to carry ethical and testimonial weight.
