Modern Translations Sanitizing Ancient Texts

I’ve heard people say that some modern translations of ancient texts are toned down to fit modern values. Are these translations being sanitized in a way that misleads readers?

In some cases, yes. Certain modern translations soften or euphemize references to sex, violence, slavery, or power relations to align with contemporary sensibilities. While this can make texts more accessible, it may also blur the social and cultural realities of the original work. That’s why scholars often recommend comparing multiple translations—and, when possible, consulting the original language—to get a more accurate sense of the text’s meaning and tone.
