QGIS or ENVI, which one is better for spatial data analysis?
3 years ago in ENVI , Remote Sensing Software , Spatial Data Analysis By Chayan
Hi everyone, I am working on a project where I need to perform a spatial data analysis. That is why I am trying to compare the uses of QGIS with the uses of other remote sensing softwares (one of which is ENVI).
Can anyone please help me in choosing the best software?
Thank you.

I believe the choice of better software depends from person to person as some may find ArcGIS better and others may choose QGIS. I have worked on both and according to me ArcGIS is better as it has many in-built tools for performing different functions. But for QGIS, external sources are used to get some plug-ins which fail to work at times. However, QGIS is easily available because it’s free and ArcGIS comes at a cost. So, if you can fit it in the research budget, then I would suggest you to go with ArcGIS.

Hello Chayan, As Mark said, it is mostly about what you can afford but there are other factors as well. QGIS can keep documentation with ease and has a list of users and active members who can answer your technical queries in case you get stuck which makes it a powerful program, considering that it is also free of cost. As for ArcGIS or ArcPRO, they are also effective and used by most of the researchers in the US as well but they are expensive. Moreover, time is also an issue. I would suggest if you are already aware of one software and have knowledge of how to use it, then choose that one because learning a new software’s in and you can be time consuming for your research. However, if you are using the program for the first time, then it is better to choose the one that comes with tutorials and people who can answer your questions because you will definitely have them. So, good luck. I hope you choose the right software.

Hi Chayan, I would suggest you search for Jose’s chart as it can help you better. Moreover, I see that the members above suggested that you check your budget and expertise in the program, and yes, these factors do affect the choice. However, we are missing one important factor and that is the aim of your study. Well, both QGIS and ArcGIS are GIS based programs which can enable you to view, edit and analyse the geospatial data. But the ENVI software you mentioned is a software used to analyse the geospatial data based on the remote sensing function. If you have to do a basic geospatial analysis, then QGIS can be used to present the results through a map as it has great mapping tools which come for free. On the other hand, ENVI has different packages, modules and possibilities of integration with ArcGIS because it comes with a stronger spectral analysis program supported by cloud option. Basically, ArcGIS and ENVI can go hand in hand. In addition to these points, remember that the operating system is also a decisive factor when it comes to choosing the right software. So, choose the software that fits all the requirements.
