What actually constitutes "virtue" in the context of contemporary society?

If we agree virtue is important, what specific qualities should we be fostering? I need analyses that move beyond abstract theory to propose concrete virtues—perhaps like empathy, resilience, or cosmopolitanism—that are responsive to the unique moral landscape of the 21st century, with its inequalities, crises, and interconnectivity.

In my view, contemporary virtue constitutes a set of cultivated dispositions that enable responsible agency in our complex world. This includes informed empathy to navigate diversity, adaptive resilience for personal and collective challenges, and cosmopolitan justice extending moral concern beyond borders. Crucially, I’d add technological stewardship—the wisdom to use tools ethically. Unlike static lists, these virtues are dynamic, requiring critical engagement with information and a commitment to sustainable flourishing for both human and ecological communities. They are practiced, not just professed.
