What are common survey items used to measure Green Technology Innovation?

I’m working on a study related to sustainability and innovation. Does anyone have sample questionnaire items or scales that are commonly used to measure Green Technology Innovation?

Yes, there are commonly used questionnaire items to measure Green Technology Innovation, usually broken into multiple dimensions. Typical items assess product innovation (e.g., introducing eco-friendly products), process innovation (reducing energy, water, or emissions), R&D focus (budget or effort dedicated to green tech), and organizational support (existence of green R&D teams or policies). These are often measured using Likert scales. For validated items, journals like Journal of Cleaner Production and Research Policy are good places to look and adapt from prior studies.

Thank you, this is really helpful! I like how you broke it into dimensions. It makes designing a survey much more straightforward.

In addition to the main dimensions mentioned, some surveys also include items on collaboration and external partnerships. For example, whether the firm works with suppliers, universities, or government agencies to develop green technologies. Another dimension sometimes measured is market orientation, such as whether the company seeks green solutions in response to customer demand or environmental regulations. These additional items can give a more holistic picture of green innovation in practice.

Thanks a lot! Including collaboration and market orientation is a great idea.

From a methodological perspective, it’s also important to distinguish between intended vs implemented innovation. Some items might ask about plans or policies to develop green technologies, while others measure actual outcomes, like number of eco-friendly products launched or emissions reduced. Combining both types of items helps capture both commitment and performance, and improves the validity of the survey results.
