What are some current research topics in mathematics education?

As a doctoral student aiming to contribute meaningful work, I want to align my research with the evolving conversations in the discipline. I'm interested in both the "hot" methodological trends and the substantive questions about equity, cognition, and technology that scholars are currently grappling with.

The field is vibrant and increasingly interdisciplinary. I have seen a dominant shift toward research centered on equity, identity, and anti-deficit approaches studying how to make mathematics classrooms more inclusive and how societal structures impact access. Concurrently, research on embodied cognition and the thoughtful integration of technology (like AI tutors or dynamic modeling software) is massive. Methodologically, design-based research, which collaboratively develops and studies interventions in real classrooms, is highly valued for its practical impact. I would recommend exploring where these strands intersect.
