What are some resources to find a PhD position in astronomy?
The application process seems scattered across different countries and institutions. I want to ensure I'm using the right portals and not missing key deadlines or hidden opportunities. Beyond just listing websites, I’d appreciate advice on how to effectively search and vet potential advisors and projects.

Having served on admissions committees, I recommend a multi-pronged approach. First, bookmark the AAS Job Register and the Europlanet Society’s jobs page as your primary filters. However, I have seen the most successful candidates go further. I would recommend directly browsing the “People” or “Research” pages of department websites at your top 10 institutes to identify professors whose recent papers excite you. Don’t just wait for a posting; a thoughtful, specific email expressing interest in their work can sometimes open doors before a formal advert is made. Start this process at least 12 months before your intended start date.
