What are the key design guidelines for constructing edge-fed spiral antennas?

Spiral antennas are popular for wideband and circularly polarized applications, but edge-fed designs have specific challenges. From my experience designing and testing spiral antennas, I have seen that edge-fed configurations require careful attention to arm geometry, spacing, and substrate choice to maintain broadband and circular polarization. I would recommend starting with a logarithmic or Archimedean spiral profile, ensuring the feed point supports proper impedance transformation to 50?Ω, and paying attention to the termination to reduce reflections. In practice, bandwidth and axial ratio are sensitive to arm width, spacing, and dielectric properties. Iterative simulation combined with prototype measurements is essential, as small deviations in fabrication or feed placement can significantly alter radiation patterns and polarization purity.
