What are the key solubility properties of silicones?

I'm working on a composite material where silicone is a key component, and its interaction with solvents is critical for processing and performance. The solubility parameters seem non-intuitive compared to common organic polymers. As a materials scientist, I need a clear, practical grasp of what makes silicones dissolve in some media and repel others. What are the fundamental solubility properties dictated by their siloxane backbone and organic side chains?

In my formulation experience, the cardinal rule with silicones is their profound hydrophobicity and oleophilicity, stemming from their low-polarity siloxane backbone and methyl groups. Their key solubility property is a very low Hansen solubility parameter (typically around 15 MPa¹⁄²). This means they are insoluble in polar solvents like water and alcohols but will readily mix with non-polar hydrocarbons like toluene or certain chlorinated solvents. For processing, I recommend using solvents like n-hexane or xylene. Remember, their exceptional surface activity and incompatibility with many organics are direct consequences of this unique solubility profile.
