What do the levels of passive, active, interactive, and supra-active mean in design, and can they be applied to product design?

I am exploring design theory and want to understand how different levels of interaction—from passive to supra-active—are defined and whether they can meaningfully guide product design decisions.

From my experience, these levels describe increasing degrees of user involvement. Passive design requires minimal user action, while active and interactive designs respond to user input. Supra-active design goes further by enabling users to co-create or adapt the product. I have seen this framework used effectively in digital and smart products. I would recommend applying it selectively in product design to align interaction level with user needs, context, and cognitive load rather than treating higher interaction as inherently better.
