What methodology should be followed for selecting a custom antenna topology for a specific application?
Selecting an appropriate antenna topology involves more than intuition—it requires balancing bandwidth, gain, polarization, size, and fabrication constraints. I want to understand how to systematically evaluate potential topologies, incorporate simulation and analytical tools, and justify a design choice for a given application.

From my experience guiding antenna design projects, I have seen that selecting a custom topology works best when approached systematically. I would recommend first clearly defining performance requirements—frequency, bandwidth, gain, polarization, and form factor. Next, survey candidate topologies (patch, dipole, spiral, fractal, etc.) and assess their theoretical suitability. Use full-wave simulation tools to model each option under realistic constraints, evaluating impedance, radiation patterns, and efficiency. Finally, perform a trade-off analysis, balancing performance, fabrication feasibility, and size. In practice, iterative refinement between simulations, prototyping, and measurement ensures the chosen topology meets both application requirements and practical limitations.
