What exactly is the Student t-test, and when should it be used?

The Student t-test appears frequently in quantitative research. However, its assumptions are not always clearly explained.I want to understand when its use is methodologically appropriate.

From my experience supervising quantitative research, the Student t-test is most useful when comparing means between groups with relatively small samples. I have seen problems arise when researchers apply it mechanically without checking assumptions like normality and variance. I would recommend using it when your research question genuinely concerns mean differences and when data conditions justify it, rather than treating it as a default statistical solution.
