What is the importance of reaction databases in organic chemistry?
I want to convey to students that databases like Reaxys or SciFinder are more than digital libraries. They seem to represent a collective, codified intelligence of the discipline. How have they truly transformed how we plan syntheses, avoid pitfalls, and innovate? I'm interested in the historical and epistemological perspective as much as the practical one.

From my experience, their deepest importance is as the collective memory and connectome of our field. Before databases, knowledge was siloed in paper journals. Now, we can trace reaction lineages and see the evolution of a methodology in minutes. This hasn't just made us faster; it’s made us more creative. I have seen students make novel disconnections by querying a database in ways a human couldn't manually. They are the foundational infrastructure that allows us to stand on the shoulders of giants, efficiently avoiding known failures and building on proven success.
