What is the philosophy of chemistry and why is it important?

As a researcher in the history of science, I'm trying to move beyond traditional philosophy of science, which often focuses on physics. I'm curious about how we think about the nature of chemical substances, reductionism, and the practice of modelling and synthesis. Understanding this seems crucial for a more complete picture of scientific methodology.

In my work, I've seen the philosophy of chemistry move from the periphery to a vital field that challenges physics-centric views of science. It’s important because it rigorously examines what a 'chemical substance' really is an entity with unique properties not fully predicted by quantum mechanics alone. It also analyzes the pragmatic art of chemical modeling and synthesis. I’d recommend engaging with it to appreciate how scientific reasoning differs across disciplines and to better understand the nature of material reality.
